Hit and Sort-of miss

Hello Lovelies!

Today I want to talk about mascara. Why? I’ve learned the importance of mascara the hard way. Have you ever had one of those days where you feel like you are racing against the clock from the get-go? If you haven’t you should try it. Really great way to start the day… So, I was having one of those days  last week and I completely forgot to put on mascara. I keep thinking something was different with my makeup but I couldn’t quite figure out what. The sad part is that I didn’t realize it until I was washing off my face at the end of the day. Oh well, not that worse thing that has happened to me.

Wearing Maybelline’s Colossal Big Shot Mascara

I’m not one to really purchase high-end, name-brand mascaras. I’ve tried a few of them in the past, but have found that drug store brands make great mascaras! They are really affordable and I get the effect I am looking for. What do I like in a mascara? I like length and volume, but if I had to, I would go for volume over length. I don’t like the super clumpy look on me, but I do like some of it, especially because my day time makeup is so simple.

Maybelline’s Colossal Big Shot Mascara

My two current favorites are Maybelline’s Colossal Big Shot Mascara and Loreal’s Voluminous Butterfly Sculpt. The Colossal Big Shot Mascara got a lot of attention on social media so I was really looking forward to trying it. I have to say I was a little disappointed with this product. All the hype around this was that it gave you the perfect amount of clumpy-ness and length, but that was not what I experienced. I did get some length, but I didn’t really get much volume. It did made my eye lashes look separated, which I really liked. If I had to go with a Maybelline mascara, I would much prefer to use the Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara.

Loreal’s Voluminous Butterfly Sculpt Mascara

I have loved the Loreal Voluminous Butterfly Sculpt mascara for quite some time now. I love the volume it adds to my lashes and I how long lasting it is. This mascara also claims to tightline your upper water line and I agree 100% with that statement. I’ve had days where I don’t line my water line and this mascara has come to the rescue, making my lash line look thicker and fuller. I also like the wand as I feel that you can really get to the root of the lashes. This is mascara is one of my holy grail makeup products.

What is your favorite mascara? Have you tried either of these? Do you prefer drugstore or high-end brands?

The A-list: Maybelline’s Color Jolt Lip Paint

Hello Lovelies,

Today I want to tell you about a lip product I have been using pretty much all season long. I wouldn’t necessarily describe myself as a lipstick loving gal. In all honesty, I forget to put lipstick on most days, opting for a balm and calling it a day. It’s not that I don’t like lipsticks, I just forget to put some on after I drop off Alex at school.

On days where I do take the time to wear something on my lips, other than lip balm, it is usually a pretty neutral color. I have been brave enough to wear a red or a dark wine color to work, but I usually reserve those for special occasions. So, I stock my little makeup bag with a few options, all of which are neutral.

Maybelline’s Color Jolt Lip Paint in Stripped Down (05)

I picked up the Color Jolt Lip Paint from Maybelline a few months ago. I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I am not a fan of lip glosses but this was advertised as something more than just a lip gloss. I was pleasantly surprised by the consistency – very creamy and not sticky whatsoever. The pigmentation is great also. The color I picked up is Stripped Down (05) and on me it looks Mauvy Pink – a little bit like my lips but better kind of color. The applicator is nice – a squeeze tube with a felt top that makes it easy to apply product directly onto your lips. The color range for his line is decent – some classic colors like red, fuchsia, wine, but here are also an interesting color violet color. I am curious to try a few more but I’m waiting for the Summer as I think those would be perfect for that time of year.

The reason why I love this product so much is because it feels moisturizing on my lips, it is easy and quick to apply, and the color is perfect with pretty much any look.

Have you tried these? If so, what color(s)? What are your thoughts?

Loreal Infallible Foundation Trio

Hello Lovelies!

Today I want to talk to you about the Loreal’s Infallible foundations, specifically the last three releases. I am sure you have all heard of these by now, but I wanted to give you a mini review and my opinions on these products. I tried to keep my makeup the same for all three products and I applied them all using a beauty blender. So, let’s just jump right into it, shall we?

Loreal Infallible Pro-Glow Foundation:
Out of the three foundations recently released, this one is technically the second one. However, it was the first one I tried. Not only that, this was the first drugstore foundation I had ever tried! This foundation is advertised as an air-light, medium coverage foundation with a radiant finish as super long wear (24hours!). From my experience this foundation ticks all those boxes, except for the wear time. I have not tried to wear this for 24 hours but I have worn it for over 12 hours and I can see some areas where the foundation seems to have dissapeared. The texture of the foundation is very watery but it’s a really nice product. What I love about this foundation is how easy it is to blend and how it melts into your skin. I am currently using color 208-Sun Beige, but I also have 209-Caramel Beige, which is more of my Summer shade. I also have to tell you that you don’t really feel this foundation on the skin (remember that air-light description?) and it is very build-able if you prefer a higher coverage.

Loreal Pro-Matte Foundation:
I liked the Pro-Glow so much that I was curious to try to Pro-Matte. At this price point, what did I have to lose? The description for this foundation is similar to the Pro-Glow, differing mostly in finish and actual texture of the foundation. It is air-light, like the glow version, but the texture is a bit thicker. Don’t be discouraged by this though as this foundation also blends very easily and also melts into your skin. The other differing quality from the glow version is that the finish in this foundation is demi-matte. I find that this foundation wears better than the Pro-Glow. I feel like my makeup looks pretty much the same as it did when I first applied it all day. This foundation is also build-able, but medium coverage is great for me. With either of these two foundations I apply a thin layer all over my face and lightly set it with powder. I don’t think you need to set these but I do as I don’t really touch up throughout the day and I do get oily in my T-zone.

Loreal Infallible Total Cover:
When I first heard of this foundation I was on the fence. Like I mentioned earlier, I prefer medium coverage foundations, especially for day time looks. “I don’t really need this.” So, I bought shade 309-Sun Beige. I know, I’m weak when it comes to makeup. Please don’t judge me. 🙂 The claims for this foundation are long wearing, high coverage foundation with air-light texture and natural finish. On me, this is the longest wearing foundation of the three. They are also not kidding when they say it is full coverage – a little bit goes a very long way. I apply about half of what I use with the other two foundations and it still covers everything. The texture of the foundation is thick, almost mousse like. Despite this I think it blends easily and it does feel air-light. I only set my T-zone and I am good to go for the rest of the day.

Final Thoughts:
At this point you are probably wondering which one is my favorite and which one is my least favorite, right? If I had to choose one of these, and only one, to repurchase, then that would be hands down the Pro-Matte. I love the finish on my skin and it does really well at controlling my oily T-zone. If I want to add more glow to my face then I can always do that with highlighter so I like that customization option. It is perfect for me as an every day foundation! My least favorite is the Total Cover. While I do love the finish and how long it wears I don’t like the fact that it seems to cling to areas of texture around my face. I don’t know about you, but that is not something I am trying to show off. It is also way more coverage that I want from a day time foundation.

So, there you have it. I hope you liked this mini review of these foundation. I hope it was useful if you are someone who is on the fence about trying any, or all of them.

Please let me know if you have tried these and what your thoughts are.

Dinner Date Makeup

Hello Lovelies!

This past weekend Clay’s (El Hub) company hosted their Annual Holiday Party. I know, it’s been few weeks since “The Holidays”, but they always schedule it early in the year to maximize the number of employees that can make it to the party. I think it’s kind of nice that they try to ensure their people are back from their respective Holiday plans to throw one last party for the season. In our area this seems like a fairly common practice. I have a friend whose company Holiday party is the coming weekend. That’s practically February! I guess that fact that Puertorricans celebrate Christmas pretty much through the end of January may be a reason why I’m not bothered by the “late” celebrations. But I digress.

In previous occasions I found myself thinking about an overly complicated makeup look and stressing about the outfit. So, this time around I tired to keep things as simple and easy as possible. My default outfit color for these types of events is black. I know some of you are thinking, “Wow, that’s boring!”, but I love dressing in black. I think it’s a classic and sexy color. It’s my safe zone, so I went for it. Unfortunately, I don’t have a good picture of me in the outfit – a jumpsuit. This one was really nice, with a flowy, but not overly baggy, straight leg cut. The top was long sleeve with a mock turtleneck and it was all done in a sheer black material. For this event I wore a black camisole underneath it, but you can add a touch of sexiness to it if you wore flirty bralette. Black heals, a black and silver envelope cocktail purse, and a silver bracelet were the other items I used to complete my look. I may need to find another excuse to recreate this look. Would you guys like to see that?

Ready for a nice dinner date!

Makeup. I wanted something simple and tried and true. I’ve been wearing a brown daytime smokey eye look a lot recently so I decided to go with that, adding black in my upper waterline instead of brown to darken the root of the lashes. The look turned out to be a tad darker than I had envisioned ( I did add black…), but in the dark dinner hall I think it ended up looking just right. Before I started the look I laid out the products I was going to use. I was kind of shocked at the amount of products needed for this “simple” look. No need to panic, take a deep breath and here is the breakdown of what it took to get my face on.

FACE:
Foundation: Too Faced Born This Way Foundation in Sand
Corrector (under eyes): MAC Prep and Prime in Peach Lustre
Concealer: Estee Lauder Double Wear in 3W Medium Warm
Setting Powder: Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder
Bronzer: MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Give Me Sun
Contour: Too Faced Chocolate Soleil in Medium/Deep
Highlighter: Essence Pure Nude Highlighter and Lorac Perfectly Lit Luminizing Powder
Blush: NARS Blush in Madly

img_2941
All this was on my face!

EYES:
Shadows: Revlon Color Stay Cream Color in Chocolate (all over lid), MAC Bronzer in Give Me Sun (crease), and a combination of the highlighters in the inner corners and brow bone.
Liner: Revlon Color Stay 2-in-1 Angled Kajal Liner in Fig (to darken the upper and lower lash line), Maybelline Master Precise Skinny Gel Pencil in Defining Black (upper waterline), MAC Studio Chromographic Pencil in NC25/NC30 (lower waterline)
Mascara: Loreal Voluminous Butterfly Sculpt in Blackest Black

BROWS:
Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Dark Brown

LIPS:
Milani Amore Matte Lip Cream in Loved
NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Zurich

Finishing Spray: Make Up For Ever Fix & Mist

To finish up the entire look I curled my hair lightly to create soft curls. And voila! I hope you liked this look. We had a really great dinner and I was happy that I didn’t spend hours getting ready.

Recent Drugstore Haul

Hello Lovelies and Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday and that 2017 is off to a great start. I wanted to share with you guys a few of the drugstore purchases I made over the Holiday season and kind of give you a quick first impressions on the products.

Ulta Haul!

I went to Ulta in early December and grabbed a few much, ahem, “much needed” items. In one of my previous blogs I had mentioned how impressed I was with the Loreal Infallible Pro-Glow foundation. The first shade I purchased, #209 was getting a bit too dark for my Winter face so I grabbed 208 hoping it would not be too different. Well, I am happy to report that it works great. It’s just a tad light but once I have bronzer and blush on things seem to even out. I don’t find that these foundations really oxidize much and I like that about them. There’s nothing more frustrating that putting on a foundation that matches you, only to look at yourself in the rearview mirror on your way to work and find out you look like an Oompa Loompa. If you can’t tell I still really like the foundation.

The most expensive product in this bunch was the Murad Renewing Eye Cream. I had ran out of my beloved Bobbi Brown and was curious to try this guy again. My first try with this product was good, but nothing overwhelming and I feel the same way about it this go around. It is a good eye cream but I don’t really see any benefit to reducing the fine lines or improving my dark circles. The cream is moisturizing but, unlike the Bobbi Brown one, I don’t feel the hydration at the end of the day.

I purchased a few things from Essence. I had already tried the ash Princess mascara. I really like this mascara for it’s lengthening effect. Given that their products are so inexpensive I decided to give the All Eyes on Me mascara a try. I was very underwhelmed by this one. This seemed to barely coat my eyelashes with product and there was no volume effect whatsoever. The eyeshadows that I purchased were more of a last minutes decision. The colors looked pretty, everyday neutrals. Sadly the color pay off was not good. This makes it less attractive for me to use in the mornings.Again, the price point for these products is very inexpensive so I don’t feel terrible for trying them out. I’ve heard good reviews on the Essence pallets so I may try those in the near future.

Last but not least is the Essence Highlighter. This IS AWESOME! This is hands down the best purchase of the bunch. If you are looking for a very subtle, every day wearable highlighter, this is your guy! I find the peachy/pink color to be very complimentary to my skin tone. It adds the perfect glow from within look!

More exciting products!

I was very excited about my most recent drugstore purchase.

By now, I’m sure you’ve all head about Loreal’s latest foundation, the Infallible Total Cover. I picked up the shade #308- Sun Beige, as this was the same color as my Winter Pro-Glow shade. I can’t say that I love it but I’ve only tried it once and the shade is not a good match. I have all three of Loreal’s Infallible foundations so be on the lookout for a review/comparison between these soon.

Maybelline also recently released a new mascara, Colossal Big Shot. This mascara has been all over social media and everyone claims that it is awesome for giving you big lashes. I have not used this one long enough to form a real opinion but, so far, I like it.

Last but not least is the Elf Cream Eyeliner. I am completely obsessed with Elf’s liquid eyeliner so I figured I would give the cream version a try. I have to say that I am not a huge fan. The formula was a bit dry and the color pay off was not good. I had to layer a few coat to get it to be truly black. It’s been a while since I used cream eyeliner so I am not giving up on it yet. I have a few other brushes that I want to try with the cream to see if that makes for quicker application.

So, there you have it. I hope you enjoyed this quick preview of my latest hauls. Please let me know if you have tried any of these. I would love to hear your thoughts or if you have any other recommendations of things I should try or things you would like to see me talk about on the blog.

My beloved quintet

Whoa! It’s been 3+ months since my last post. Wow! I wish I had a really good excuse for being AWOL, but I don’t. So, what has happened in the last three months? Well, I sort of-kind of got a promotion at work, Alex turned 3 and we took a family vacation to Orlando for my brother’s wedding. All good things, all busy and time consuming in one way or another. But, we are settling down for Winter and we are slowly shaping a new routine.

Today I want to tell you about the five products I have been loving so far this season. You will be happy to know that they are all drugstore items too! I have been pretty much doing my entire face with these products. The quality, color pay off and lasting power of these products is amazing! Of course the price can’t be beat!

img_2753
The five products I’ve been loving for the past couple of months.

Loreal Infallible Pro-Glow Foundation
Amazing! I am SO impressed with this foundation. Everyone has been praising this product and it deserves every bit of it. I have to confess that this is my first ever drugstore foundation and I cannot be more happy that I tried it. I use the shade Caramel Beige (209) and it matches me perfectly! It has a runny consistency but the color payoff is impressive. A little really does go a long way. I love that it blends very easily (I use a beauty blender), looks super natural on the skin and it gives you a beautiful luminous finish. The lasting power is awesome. If you haven’t tried it you need to go get it, like now!

Jordana Made to Last Liquid Eyeshadow
This was really a random drugstore buy for me. I saw a few of these in a not-so obvious end cap, liked the color and decided to give it a try. The color of this one is 05 Dusk Till Bronze. I regret not getting more colors. This is a highly pigmented mousse that dries to a powder. It is very easy to work with and it lasts all day long. I have been especially loving this now that we are in the Fall/Winter season. I love that it gives me a wash of color with some shine, but not the chunky, glittery, foiled shine. I especially love it for a very subtle and day time appropriate smokey eye look. Perfect Fall eye look!

img_2755
Revlon’s Colorstay Kajal (fig;bottom) and Maybelline’s Skinny Gel Pencil (black;top)

Revlon Colorstay 2in1 Angled Kajal
Very pigmented, long lasting, easy to blend, does not smear, and it comes with it’s own brush. What more can you ask for in an eyeliner? This has been my go to eyeliner when creating that smokey eye look, especially when paired with the Jordan liquid eyeshadow. I use the color 102 Fig. The angled tip provides easy application and the brush blends the product perfectly. I also like to use his in the waterline because it does not move. I can also see how this would make a really good base to layer eye shadows on top. The product is creamy and you have time to work with it before it sets. If smokey eyes are your thing, give this little fellow a try.

Maybelline Master Precise Skinny Gel Pencil
This is the perfect pencil for the upper waterline. At least that’s what I’ve been using it for. The super skinny tip makes it super easy to apply product without poking your eyes. I love to use this when I am doing a winged eyeliner as it helps make a better defined and complete look. It is also great to use with a smokey eye, either as a base or to darken the lash line. My only complain is that it does smudge a little bit. I have tried similar products from high-end brands and this is a really good value for your money.

img_2756
Elf’s Liquid Eyeliner (black)

Elf Liquid Eyeliner
I will always and forever love a winged eye liner. It will be my lifelong goal to master this technique. Luckily for me, I am doing better with that these days. So much so that I got a little cocky and decided to ditch my beloved Kat von D eyeliner pencil and went for what I consider to be a more advanced form of liquid eyeliner.  This is a product that was recommended by Arshia Makeup on YouTube. I love her, and if she says it’s good, I know it will be good. So, I stopped by the drugstore, looked at the priced of the product and figured I had pretty much nothing to lose. Let me tell you, when I finally tried this I surprised myself. This liquid liner is very black (Yes!). The brush shape is just the right width and has the right flexibility (Yes!). It lasts all day (Yes!). This is a product that I will continue to purchase because it is really such good quality and value! I love it!

Aside from concealer, bronzer and blush, this has been my face as of lately. I am not sure that this will be changing much but I will keep you posted if it does. Please let me know if you guys want me to do a more in depth review of any of these items.

Great find! Revlon Colorstay Skinny Liquid Liner in Navy Shock

Hello Lovelies!

Today I wanted to share with you a great find. I had to rush into Walgreens a few days ago to pick up some last minute things and some much needed Ibuprofen. The makeup section was to the left when you walk into the store and everything I needed was to the right. What did I do? Yep, I quickly steered myself to the left. “It’ll just be a few minutes.” A few things caught my eye. One, they are now selling Soap & Glory products. I have not tried any myself but I have heard good things about the brand.

IMG_2048
Revlon Colorstay Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in Navy Shock

The second, and the reason for this post, was this Revlon Skinny liquid liner. What really drew me to this particular product was the fact that it was navy blue. I’ve always liked the idea of using navy blue as an eyeliner. It’s dark enough to really frame my eyes, but it is also a subtle pop of color. Win! I tried this the very next day.

IMG_2050
Skinny Liquid Liner by Revlon.

The applicator is very nice, and thin, just as the name suggests. It is also a bit long so you can really lay down flat for application. My only complaint is that I think it picks up more product that I can handle for initial application. To get around this I will simply clean some off the excess against the edge of the bottle. That way I can control how much product I use. I guess it may be a problem for us that are somewhat new to the liquid liner world. The color, Navy Shock is dark and very pigmented. It has a bit of a shinny finish, so that may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

I like to apply it on it’s own, or over the top of black to give it more depth. When I do the latter it has the neat effect of adding something extra. Like it makes you do a double take – at first glance it might not look like much, but then you start to see the blue peak through. So, there you have it. If you love basics but are looking for a little pop of color with good staying power, the Revlon Colorstay Skinny Liner might be just the thing you are looking for.

Lulu

I’m curious. Have you guys tried Soap & Glory products? What are you favorite eyeliner colors?
